“What Every Visual Artist Should Know About Copyright”, Saturday, April 16, 2011

Seminar topics present the history of copyright law and how it has evolved; a discussion about Fair Use and the definition of infringement. And what is the Copyright War? Susan Carr and Richard Kelly will show licening solutions pioneered by organizations such as Creative Commons, PLUS and Public Knowledge. They will present the basics of copyright registration and why all photographers and other visual artists who value their work should bother to register their images. In the afternoon, attendees will register their own images for copyright protections. Attendees should bring their computers for this purpose. Erin Rodgers, Staff Attorney for TALA with experience in intellectual property law will give examples from specific case studies dealing with illegal image usage and copyright lawsuits.

Workshop space for the Copyright Seminar is being sponsored by The Cultural Enrichment Center of the University of Houston – Downtown. Lunch will be provided for registrants at the workshop site. After the workshop, participants are invited to a cocktail reception and tour for the exhibition Nowhere Near Here, New Photography from Texas from the Talent in Texas IV series curated by Toby Kamps and Michelle White from the Menil Collection. The reception will be at FotoFest immediately following the workshop.

For participants coming from outside of Houston, FotoFest has a special room rate of $139.00 + tax at the boutique hotel Icon Houston, 220 Main Street Houston, Texas 77002. Mention FotoFest when making your reservations. The hotel is located on the Houston METROrail, which stops directly in front of University of Houston – Downtown building. The hotel is also with walking distance of the campus.

“Form 990: The Challenge Continues

Form 990 must be filed for 2010 for all tax-exempt organizations with annual gross revenue exceeding $200,000 or assets of more than $500,000. This session is important for first filers of the greatly expanded Form 990 (revenue threshold has fallen from $1,000,000 in 2008 and $500,000 in 2009). To also benefit those already familiar with the form, the session will focus on parts of the return that deserve particular attention from the viewpoint of those that govern the filing entity and the public that seeks to understand the entity with information on the return. Nonprofit experts Jody Blazek and Amanda Adams, Blazek & Vetterling CPAs, will provide an overview of the 990 experience to date, and assess implications for the future.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Address issues of concern and interest to accounting and legal professionals who perform services for nonprofits, board treasurers, and financial staff members of nonprofits.
LEVEL OF INSTRUCTION: Overview/Update; PREREQUISITE: Familiarity with nonprofit administration or accounting; CPE CREDIT: 3 Hours

REFUND POLICY: Cancellation fees: $5.00 for all 1-3 hour programs; $10.00 for 4-8 hour programs; $20.00 for programs with fees over $100.00; $25.00 for all conferences. NO REFUNDS will be issued on cancellations received after 12:00 Noon five working days prior to the seminar. A registration may be transferred to another individual; an additional registration fee will be charged to a nonmember CPA transferee. NO SHOWS forfeit the entire registration fee.

Welcome Party for TALA’s New Executive Director, Lee A. Schnell, Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Please join us Wednesday, May 4th in welcoming our newly hired Executive Director, Lee A. Schnell. Lee comes to TALA from Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County where he served as Executive Director for five years. During his tenure, Lee increased the annual output of homes built per year to 20 and led the development of a 19-acre tract where Habitat will continue to build up to 90 homes over the next four years. Prior to his role at Habitat, Lee served as Vice President of Student Services and Employment Services for ten years at The Art Institute of Houston.

Lee and his wife have been residents of Houston for the past 32 years, and Lee has been an active volunteer for a number of organizations and programs, including The YMCA, Kid Care, and participated extensively as a youth sports coach. Lee and his wife have three children and four grand children, and his oldest son is an artist teaching art and photography at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson.

Please feel free to drop by, say hi and share some refreshments with TALA members, supporters, and many others within the artistic, legal and accounting communities!
